Experience Life in a Hawaii Real Estate Paradise: What It’s Like to Call Kuki’o Home
Think Hawaii luxury real estate and one word always comes to mind – Kuki’o. The name of the private oceanfront club and residential community is synonymous with some of the most admired and sought after real estate in Hawaii. With world class amenities, scenery that takes your breath away and multimillion dollar estate homes that are truly magnificent, Kuki’o on Hawaii’s Big Island is the very definition of paradise.
So, just what is a day like living in one of the world’s most exclusive luxury communities? We sat down with one of our real estate portfolio management clients to discuss the community, the lifestyle and of course, the spectacular ocean side home. The 9,200+ sq. ft. estate, built by Linthicum, boasts Big Island living at its very best. From the private lanais overlooking the Pacific Ocean, to taking in the views of the dazzling emerald green links, we get all of the details on what it is like to be right at “home” in Hawaii.
Kukio Private Residence 57
Q: You could live anywhere in the world, why did you choose this location?
A: It’s all about the ocean and sunsets. We took a lot of time and considered a few places to build our dream vacation home… in the end, we chose Kukio. We love it here. This is our refuge. It’s the ultimate in relaxation. When you are here, everything just feels right. I walk through those front doors and it literally feels like, “Ah… I’m home”.
Q: The views from the house are stunning. Tell me about choosing the lot.
A: We walked out there and I saw the contrast of the lush greenery against the black lava and it was just magic. The ocean was right there and we could visualize this home, with spanning lanais facing the direction of the sunset. The sunsets here are beyond spectacular. The sun becomes this blazing orange color and you sit out back on the lanai and just watch it sink into the ocean. It is breathtaking. It’s like a private show every night. The sky lights up with the most vibrant colors. It’s just phenomenal.
Q: The house is literally a work of art. How did it all come together?
A: We chose Linthicum as our builder and Bing Hu as our architect, so we knew we were in excellent hands from the beginning. When you are pouring your heart and soul into a home, there is no room for anything less than perfection. Bing Hu just “got it” from the moment we talked to him. We wanted this to feel like home. We wanted modern, yet livable and he went beyond our wildest expectations. Linthicum did an extraordinary job in building this home… In fact, they just built another home for us in another state. I think it’s really important for people to know that we chose the best and brightest and this house is a result of a collaboration of the most talented people in the business.
Q: Livability was a huge priority for you. Can you explain a bit more?
A: We wanted a home that was a haven… a place that would be ideal for our entire family. The house is just perfect. It’s big enough to be comfortable when the entire family comes to stay but it’s just as comfortable when it’s just my husband and I. We definitely wanted that flexibility. It had to feel “right” whether two people were staying here or ten. I think all the thought that went into the house with the native materials, the layout, the lanais… it’s really an indescribable type of thing… it’s just the best feeling.
Q: The design of this house really captures the Hawaiian lifestyle. I imagine you sipping a little drink with an umbrella in it on the lanai… is it really like that?
A: (laughs)… It’s everything you imagine and more! We spend so much time outside. Really, the house was designed to blur that line between indoors and out. When the house is open, you can walk through the front entry, straight through the middle of the house and go directly out to the lanai overlooking the pool and the ocean. It’s really a lifestyle that is all about relaxation. Watching the sunset as you are curled up on the hammock, sitting down on the beach just taking in the simple pleasure of being surrounded by nature, napping during the middle of the day with the cool breeze blowing in… it is amazing. Speaking of which, one of the best places in the house is the master bedroom. The glass walls disappear and you just feel like you are in another world… you have never been so relaxed in your life. I just love that feeling.
Q: What is your favorite part of the house?
A: Well, my husband and I would have different answers, so I’ll give you both. My husband’s favorite part of the house is the office. Even when we are on vacation, he is busy working. His office opens to the back lanai so, as he is hard at work it still feels like he is getting away. He can just walk out there, take a deep breath of the pure Hawaiian air and clear his mind. He really enjoys that. Another bonus is the time zone here. He can finish work earlier in the day and still have time to spend relaxing.
My favorite part of the house is a tie between the kitchen and the back lanai. The kitchen is truly built as the heart of the home. When the family is here, it’s where we all end up. I love to cook and the kitchen is exactly what I wanted. Everything is top of the line and I have that amazing view with the ocean on the horizon. It’s doesn’t get any better than that. And, of course, I have to say the lanai is a favorite place. Morning through evening, it’s all about the lanai. I can sit out there reading a book or sit out there doing absolutely nothing and be perfectly content.
Q: The pool is definitely a main attraction here. Tell me what’s so special about it?
A: Oh wow, the pool. It’s gorgeous, isn’t it? We wanted the pool to feel like an extension of the ocean. We wanted to go out on the back lanai and feel like the pool and the ocean were one. The negative edge design was the first part but the magic really happened when we picked the tile. It’s kind of funny. We wanted perfection, so there’s quite a story behind that tile. Let’s just say, when we found it, we knew it was really special. The pool is just the most extraordinary cobalt blue and it does look like the ocean. Everyone loves it. It’s definitely a star of the show around here.
Q: Tell me a little bit about Kukio. Why do you “love” it?
A: Two reasons. First, we chose the ideal home site. We are far enough from the club to feel like we are on our own private paradise but close enough to be a golf cart ride away from the fantastic amenities. Our home is very private. It’s so quiet and we can stay here for weeks at a time without seeing a soul. On the other hand, if we want to go to the spa or to eat, the club is so close. It’s having the best of both worlds… all the privacy you want with world class amenities literally outside your front door. And, let me tell you how wonderful Kukio is in general. The people here are great. Everyone can just be themselves. It doesn’t matter who you are, a lot of well known people live here… it’s the kind of place where you can throw on flip flops and put your hair in a pony tail and you feel right at home. It’s really a perfect place for anonymity in a way. There’s a lot of freedom in just letting your hair down and being yourself.
Q. From everything you’ve said, you really adore this house, don’t you?
A. I really do. It’s awesome. I’m really excited for the next person who gets to enjoy it. I would tell them, you are going to love living here. Some of our best memories are here. This is more than a house, it really is a “home” and it just exudes happiness.
Q: Do you have anything else you would want to tell someone about the home?
A: I would want them to know that this home transforms you. When you are here, it is like nothing you’ve ever experienced. When you’re not here, you’ll find yourself longing to be here. That says it all. Oh, and I would also tell them, the house is perfect and ready for them to move in… all they need is a toothbrush! That’s just the way we want it to be for someone. All the pieces fit together so well in this house and we put so much into it… nothing would make us happier than for someone else to love it and enjoy it as much as we have.
