Ten years ago, the prestigious gated community of Silverleaf in Scottsdale, Arizona set out on a quest to offer a world class, resort and golf lifestyle experience like no other. This week, as we mark a decade of watching the majestic McDowell Mountain landscape transform into a five-star real estate haven, we can’t help but look back at where Silverleaf all began. As mentioned earlier this week on our blog, the tenth anniversary of Silverleaf is particularly special for us here at The Moen Group. Several people, including our Founding Partner, Todd Moen, had the privilege of working in Silverleaf from the beginning. It’s one thing to write about the accomplishments of this extraordinary community and quite another to hear it straight from someone who was there and throughout the years, watched this ambitious vision turn into a stunning reality.
You were with Silverleaf, working for the developer, DMB, from the beginning. What was Silverleaf like ten years ago?
Todd Moen: I started working for the developer in January of 2003. This was back when Silverleaf was all raw land in DC Ranch. The homes in the Parks neighborhoods were just going under construction and the fully developed custom homesites that we see in places like Upper Canyon today, didn’t yet exist. It was an exciting time for us and for real estate as a whole. It felt special from the start.
What made Silverleaf so special?
Todd Moen: Like all of their communities, DMB set out to create a lifestyle that was world-class in every way and very in tune with the environment. A great distinction with Silverleaf was not only the idea of the most diverse real estate offerings in Arizona, but also the focus on true community. A great example of this is an area known as The Parks, which offered semi-custom homes and a few custom homesites. The Parks area was something absolutely unique to Arizona real estate. You had these master planned, park-like neighborhoods, each distinctive and each with a very nostalgic feel to them. Tree lined streets, lush surroundings… the idea really was to capture a wonderful place for families to live and play and I have to tell you, when The Parks were complete, it was literally breathtaking. Silverleaf over-delivered in every single way.
What about the high mountain estate homesites in Silverleaf?
Todd Moen: What The Parks did for creating that small town feel perfected, the Upper Canyon estate homesites did for homebuyers wanting a true custom estate experience. You just had this unbelievable backdrop of the McDowell Mountains and homesites with tremendous city views. What was equally important to our homebuyers, was the privacy and security of the homesites themselves. The planning of the sites gave people the best of all worlds. You have this incredible land to build grand custom estate homes, views that are undeniably the best in Scottsdale and then the added peaceful and secure surroundings high-profile buyers really wanted. DMB’s diligent planning paid off. From the very beginning, all the way to today, our luxury home and homesite buyers very much appreciate the care taken in developing these sites.
What has been one of the most defining moments for you over the past ten years as Silverleaf has grown into what it is today?
Todd Moen: Working with DMB, from the beginning and of course, now, working in Silverleaf everyday with buyers and sellers from my own brokerage, The Moen Group, there are really so many. If I go back in time on this one, I have to say the opening of the clubhouse, which was built impeccably by Linthicum. The 50,000 sq. ft. Club at Silverleaf is first-class and a true representation of the DMB brand across the board. Thinking back, seeing the club come to completion is when the original vision of this community became tangible. You could feel how this lifestyle which was imagined and then beautifully realized, was going to move forward. The attention to detail is just extraordinary and the amenities like the spa, the Tom Weiskopf Championship Golf Course and the dining experiences are beyond world class. Experiencing the club for the first time was amazing. It really conveyed how Silverleaf was going to represent itself. True to form, the Silverleaf Club of today is just as, if not more, magnificent than the day it opened.
Speaking of today, it seems your passion for Silverleaf has grown along with the community itself?
Todd Moen: I absolutely have a passion for Silverleaf. Yes, a lot of that stems from my personal involvement in the development and sales over the years, but more importantly, Silverleaf really is one of the finest gated communities ever built. I love working in luxury real estate and my goal with each and every client is to find them the perfect lifestyle fit. That’s one of the facets of this community that is really unparalleled. From the beginning of my involvement in Silverleaf through today, I can honestly say, it’s not just about finding people a house, it’s about enhancing their lifestyles. Silverleaf represents the whole package and is an ‘experience’. When you drive through those gates, it is like entering another world. The entire development blends with the environment so well and the lifestyle is beyond compare. You have homes and amenities with this incredible authentic architecture blending seamlessly into a sweeping Sonoran setting, the Tom Weiskopf Golf Course winding through the desert and this panoramic, endless beauty. On top of it all, the people make Silverleaf. The residents here are sincere, warm and friendly. Everyone just makes you feel so welcome and comfortable. All around, Silverleaf is truly remarkable. I look forward to the next ten years.
